Serum, Ampoule & Essence
In Korean skincare, serums, ampoules, and essences are all concentrated treatments designed to deliver active ingredients deep into the skin—but they differ in texture, potency, and purpose.
An essence is a lightweight, watery formula that hydrates the skin and preps it for better absorption of the following steps. It typically contains ingredients like fermented extracts, hyaluronic acid, or botanical waters to support overall skin health and moisture.
A serum is more concentrated than an essence and usually targets specific skin concerns like wrinkles, dark spots, acne, or dullness. Serums have a slightly thicker texture and are packed with active ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, or retinol, making them a staple in many skincare routines.
An ampoule is the most potent of the three. Think of it as a “booster” product with a higher concentration of actives used for short-term, intensive care—such as calming irritated skin or brightening before an event. Ampoules are often used temporarily or layered under serums for added effect.
In short: essence = hydration, serum = targeted treatment, and ampoule = intensive boost. All three enhance your routine by addressing different layers of your skin’s needs.
